Of course, beyond Dawn's sudden appearance, there were other reasons Buffy fans didn't warm to the character. Not only did they have to accept she existed, but also put up with how annoying Dawn came across as. This wasn't just in Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 5, but even more so in season 6, where her character was largely stuck complaining, moaning, and getting on people's nerves. Some of this did make sense - she'd been abandoned a lot, had to come to terms with her real identity, and was in the shadow of her sister being the Slayer, as well as being a normal annoying teenager.
At the same time, even creator Joss Whedon admitted via IGN that they "run the same note for a while" with Dawn, understanding at least some of the complaints. She was very much portrayed as an only child, whose parents were divorced, prompting her and her mother to move to Sunnydale, California after she burned down her high school gym in Los Angeles.
While Joyce came around to Buffy being the Slayer eventually, the addition of Dawn to the household always seemed a bit suspect, as it was certainly putting another one of her children in harm's way; the Summers household was not at all out of the line of fire throughout the first four seasons. While the sibling relationship between Buffy and Dawn seemed very genuine and, despite being something of a head-scratcher for audiences, made enough sense that Dawn would have come to live with their mom after Buffy had gone off to college in season 4.
However, this was all a really elaborate set-up to introduce the Key - a powerful energy source that was sought by Glorificus, the Big Bad of season 5 , and placed into human form for the Slayer's protection. Even though the big twist regarding Dawn's identity - and existence - was a big turning point for the show that eventually led to Buffy sacrificing herself and really dying to save the world, Joss Whedon cleverly foreshadowed all of these events in earlier seasons.
Dawn's first appearance on Buffy the Vampire Slayer was season 5, episode 1, "Buffy vs. Dracula", which saw Buffy facing off with one of the most iconic vampires of all time. The episode just before, season 4's finale, "Restless" held a hint about the new character's appearance; it was an interesting time to leave hints, and because of the gap between seasons, it was easy enough to gloss over the detail.
